You Were Never Really Here
Psychological thriller film titles

Challenge
Written and directed by Lynne Ramsay and based on the Jonathan Ames book, staring Joaquin Phoenix as a traumatised mercenary hired to break a human trafficking network. It won awards for Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival. After designing her first feature film’s titles (Ratcatcher) Lynne approached me to work on this film. This brutal and beautiful film required a sequence that empathised with the protagonist’s state of mind.

Solution
Lynne likes to be surprised and one particular sequence showed a taxi driver mouthing the film’s title to him. Real or imagined, this was the perfect place to create the sequence. As the title words were spoken, they appeared like breath on his lips, in an etherial and dreamlike manner.
